Having arrived on a "dry" train, two hours after leaving Basel,
at 18h15, we had a quick look round and spotted our first port of call, appropriately
enough to the side of Flüelen harbour, opposite the white church.
|
Bliss - the first pint of the journey! Having downed our beers we
headed off to Altdorf where we had an appointment with a Pizza. We enjoyed this so
much that we didn't realise how late it was. We got to Tell's Monument, no more than
100 metres away from the Pizza Restaurant, at 22h30. There then followed an impromptu
"Night NavEx", we ended up at our accomodation for the night, the Hotel Krone in
Attinghausen, at 23h30.
|
Suitably refreshed with a few more pints that night, and following a good breakfast,
we decided to let the cable-car do the work. The gondola took us up the very steep rise
the next morning. As you can see it was quite a jump in height and saved us at least THREE hours!
|
Finally reaching the top we thought we'd returned to civilisation
but what was that hiding in the meadow that clearly had all the lads' attention?
Danny was clearly thought he was in for a treat!
|
Sorry, Danny, its only GOATS but they'll probably have udders that
size later! And an old boy without any beer - no point stopping here, we're off.
|
Looking back towards the great views we felt as small as these little
creatures beside the vastness of the mountains.
|
Continuing on, Danny was in for a real treat. He was so excited he
needed a cold shower to cool himself down but the nearest thing to that was the lake, down there,
so he had to make do with his water bottle. It's amazing how much water one of those can hold!
|
|
Nearly at the top, and with the clouds rolling in, there was nothing else to do but 'fly'
past all the lovely flowers of diverse varieties.
|
Most of the clouds having cleared we were able to stop and gaze at the surreal
scenery created by reflections in a tarn.
|
We then headed downward to our next beer stop and lunch at Blackenalp,
before arriving at our destination for the night, Alpenhutte Stäfeli, which we
appeared to be sharing with more Goats!
|
Amazing - Edelweiss - the first time I've ever seen it!
|
Past some more spectular flowers and the hotel porter (in his bright
red hat and waistcoat he reminded me of Noddy's friend Big Ears), then past the
entrance to our "deluxe" accomodation and through to the quintuple-bed room.
The owner said they had spare torches if we didn't have our own - the only electricity
was on the floor below us, in the cow stalls and milking shed. This all made for an interesting night's sleep!
|
Refreshed once again with some good beer and schnpps at night, and
breakfast of extremely fresh yoghurt, milk and goat's cheese we were ready for the continued
descent to Engelberg, taking in the sights along the way.
|
It was at this point that Philippe and Norval decided they'd had enough of
gantry gazing so they abandoned Dan and Peter to their fate!
|
Clearly, Dan had to take in one or two more gantrys before he was happy, though
Peter was taking in the scenery and thinking of home.
|
There was just time enough to take in one more waterfall before the water really fell!
The fog came in and the intrepid duo
got down to the valley bottom but, despite all the waterproof clothing and boots, they were soaked through.
See, Dan, I did it without mentioning your favourite Ticket Inspector once!
